A Summer Baby
August 11, 1946 · Halloway Hospital

Gloria Suzanne Traffas was born on August 11, 1946, at Halloway Hospital. The Traffas family had deep roots in central Kansas — Francis Albert Traffas and Betty Marine Duckworth had built their life in Sharon, a small town in Barber County near the Oklahoma line.

Sharon, Kansas in 1946 was farm country: wheat fields, oil wells on the horizon, and a community small enough that everyone knew everyone else’s name. Gloria grew up there through the fifties, in a world of 4-H fairs, church suppers, and football Friday nights.

Growing Up in Sharon

By the time she reached high school, Gloria had become one of the brightest students in her class — and one of the most involved.

While Gloria was making her way through school in Sharon, 150 miles north in Valley Center, Norman Bayer was graduating from high school and dancing at the "Lost in Space" prom. Neither of them knew the other existed.

Editor-in-Chief
1963 · Sharon High School

By her junior year, Gloria Traffas was the editor of the Sharon High School yearbook. The 1963 edition credited her by name — Gloria Traffas, Editor — and the book featured photos and rosters for every class.

Editing the yearbook in a school this small meant organizing photographs, writing copy, managing the printer’s deadlines, and making sure everyone got their picture taken. It was real editorial work.
